Book Review: by Julie Cantonwine

Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats

This book was one of the first books I picked up, when I decided to research natural and holistic health care for companion animals. This book is a very comprehensive guide to natural health care for animal lovers. One of the key subjects of the book is proper nutrition and how it is the essential foundation of a holistic approach to health & healing. Dr. Pitcairn spends most of the book talking about food & nutrition. The book gives several recipes to make homemade diets & homemade supplements. The book also goes into detail on Special diets & recipes for special pets like, high energy & growth recipes. Also included in the special diet section are recipes for vegetarian diets. The section on diet includes subjects ranging from how to introduce new foods to your pet to global, ethical and environmental concerns about meat.

Dr. Pitcairn also goes into exercise & natural grooming for companion animals to include effective & safe flea control beyond toxic chemicals. He also goes into detail on emotional connections & your pet’s health.

The whole second half of this book is dedicated to Holistic & alternative therapies. These therapies include Naturopathy, Herbology, chiropractic & other manual therapies, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Tissue salts (cell salts), and Flower Essences. The book goes into detail on how to care for a sick pet using some of these therapies. In a Quick reference section of the book, you can identify a specific illness and read about how to treat the illness with all choices of holistic approaches mentioned above.

This book just about covers it all, and would be an excellent book to have in your home or office. The “bonus” part of the book, are all of the wonderful recipes that Dr. Pitcairn provides to make your own remedies and homemade foods. I recommend this book highly, because it provides so many options to alternative, healthy pet care.

As always we welcome your feedback and comments.
