In honor of February being National Pet Dental Health Month, we wanted to give you something to chew on.
When it comes to keeping your dog’s teeth clean, most people think of brushing or dental treats—but one of the most powerful tools for dental health is something dogs already love: chewing. At Healthy Pets Northwest, we’re big believers in natural chews because they don’t just entertain your dog… they actually help keep their mouth healthy in a safe, natural way.
How Chewing Supports Dental Health
When your dog chews, the chewing action scrapes plaque and tartar off their teeth, especially
along the gum line. It also increases saliva production, which naturally helps wash away
bacteria. Chewing on raw bones can help change the PH in the mouth making it harder for plaque causing bacteria to thrive. The key is giving your dog something that actually requires work to chew, not something that dissolves in seconds, is packed with artificial ingredients or loaded with carbohydrates.
That’s where natural chews come in.
Raw & Dehydrated Animal Parts: Nature’s Toothbrush
Chews like chicken or duck feet, pig snouts and raw or freez-dried turkey and chicken necks, are incredible for dental care. They’re made of cartilage, bone, and connective tissue that gently scrapes teeth clean while your dog gnaws and crunches. These chews also have natural ridges and textures that act like tiny toothbrushes, helping remove buildup in hard-to-reach places. Unlike many processed dental treats, they don’t contain starches or sugars that can actually contribute to plaque.
Raw Bones vs. Cooked Bones
One of the biggest misconceptions in pet care is that all bones are dangerous. In reality, raw bones and cooked bones behave very differently. Raw bones are softer, more flexible and not prone to splintering. They crumble and grind down naturally as your dog chews, making them much safer and great for cleaning teeth. That’s why serious raw feeders include whole raw chicken necks, backs, wings and thighs in their dog’s meal rotation.
In case you’re wondering, raw chicken necks are great for keeping you Cat’s teeth clean, too. Many cat’s do prefer that you cut the neck into smaller pieces for them.
Cooking bones, on the other hand, makes them brittle and hard. They can splinter easily, which is why they should never be given to dogs. Raw bones, when sized appropriately and supervised, are one of the most effective natural tools for scraping tartar and strengthening jaw and gum health.
No-Hide Chews vs. Rawhide
Traditional rawhide chews are often heavily processed with chemicals, bleaches, and glues. They don’t digest well and can swell in the stomach, creating a choking or blockage risk—and they do very little for dental health beyond giving your dog something to gnaw on. No-hide chews, on the other hand, are made from natural, digestible ingredients and still provide that long-lasting chewing action dogs love. That chewing time is what helps clean teeth, stimulate gums, and reduce plaque buildup—without the risks associated with rawhide.
A Healthier Smile Starts with Natural Chews
At the end of the day, a clean mouth means a healthier dog. Natural chews support fresherbreath, healthier gums, and stronger teeth—all while making your dog incredibly happy.
At Healthy Pets Northwest, we carefully select raw, freeze-dried, dehydrated, and rawhide free chews that are safe, high-quality, and effective, so you can feel confident that every chew is doing something good for your pet’s health.
Your dog gets to chew… and their teeth get cleaner. That’s a win-win.
