Winter Tips For PDX Doggies This Holiday

winter dog

It’s finally here, fellow Portlandiers! Winter is upon us, and the cold and rain are coming in quick.

Winter in Oregon can be absolutely beautiful, however there’s a catch: With cold weather, we’ve gotta keep a closer eye on our pets’ health!

We can forget how easy it is for us to adjust our own comfort level with gloves and sweaters. Our best furry friends don’t have the luxury and can have trouble adapting sometimes!

Here are a few winter tips for PDX doggies this year:

  • If your dog spends a lot of time outside, consider feeding them a little more to provide extra calories to stay warm
  • If your dog spends a lot of time inside, consider feeding them a little less if you don’t go for as many walks or get as much exercise
  • Consider providing a space in your yard (if you have one) that provides she;ter from rain or snow.
  • Make sure water is available for your pet indoors and outdoors (make sure the outdoor water doesn’t freeze!)
  • If your doggie goes outside in extreme temperatures, please exercise caution, they can get frostbite on their tail, soles of their paws or even ears if not careful!
  • Before you drive to work, make sure there are no small animals sleeping or hiding underneath your car for a warm place (try a quick honk of your horn)
  • Make sure any ornaments or scent items are out of reach of your dogs! If it glitters, it’s probably not intended for eating.
  • Keep toxic plants like holly, poinsettias, and mistletoe out of reach.
  • If you use antifreeze, please look for a pet-safe one (if ingested, standard antifreeze can cause irreparable kidney damage or death)

Please stay safe, warm and dry out there this year! We know it’s the start of a new year after an extraordinarily hard one, and we hope this upcoming one is much better. The first step is making sure our best friends are safe!

If you are concerned at all about your doggos paws when it comes to cold (or hot) weather, come in to one of our locations and ask an associate about different types of dog boots, gloves and socks!
